YouTube Channel Removed From Roku

Sounds like Google didn’t want Roku streaming YouTube videos in an unofficial way. Dave Zatz posted this morning that the channel wasn’t available for people that didn’t already have it added. This isn’t anything new for Google and YouTube. There use to be a public API that YouTube stopped using to make companies work with them to get content. It’s mentioned in the comments on ZatzNotFunny that the Popcorn Hour had this issue a few years ago. I’m sure they are working together to get YouTube back.

YouTube Now Gives You 15 Minutes

YouTube has increased the upload time of videos from 10 minutes to 15 minutes. Now everyone will truly get their 15 minutes of fame. I have only ran into the old 10 minute time on a couple videos. I’m sure for a majority of users it wasn’t an issue.

4K Video Comes to YouTube

YouTube now supports 4K resolution which is 4096 x 2304 pixels. That’s more than 4 times the resolution of 1080p. While it’s cool that YouTube is doing this I’m not sure what the point is at this point in time. Not very many people have access to a screen or projector that can output that. And my Internet connection at home took forever to buffer when I switched to the original format. It’s still nice to see that YouTube is thinking ahead. YouTube Updates Mobile Site

YouTube updated it’s mobile site at m.youtube.com to be more complete like the YouTube homepage. I tried to access it on my Droid and still getting the old version but from what I read on twitter it looks like everyone should get the new version in the next couple of days. With the updated mobile site the dedicated apps will take a back seat to updates. It’s nice to see the new look with HTML5 supporting Android and iPhone OS. Video demo below.

Popcorn Hour Getting YouTube Access Back

Looks like the Popcorn Hour media streamers will be getting YouTube back. Well the A-200 and C-200 units will. The A-100 and the A-110 won’t handle flash so no YouTube for them. YouTube will be an application just like the others apps that are available. I’m just realizing that my A-100 keeps getting more out of date by every new release.

YouTube Launches Auto-Captioning for Everyone

YouTube original launched captioning back in November 2009 but it was limited to small groups of educational institutions. Now that feature has made it to everyones account. I’m glad Google sees the need for this and that they have opened it up to everyone. We all know that speech to text isn’t perfect but it’s a good start in reaching an audience that normally wouldn’t be able to enjoy the content. Any mistakes that Google makes can be edited by the content owner. By doing that Google will learn from it’s mistakes and make the system better. I’m going to have to try this on my videos.

Automatic Captions in YouTube

YouTube is launching several new features for captioning. There are three captioning methods now. You can upload the caption file for the video. You can create a dialog file and YouTube will match the words with the text you provided. And YouTube will automatically add captions to the video. The first two are available to everyone now. The automatic is only for a select few, Google and Education, but over time will roll out to everyone. It uses the same technology that Google Voice does to transcribe your voice mail. It isn’t perfect but overtime the system will get better. This is really cool stuff on many levels. It’s law in many places for educational institutions to create captions, which is very time consuming now, especially if your not the content creator. Now YouTube could make it easier to accommodate. It will also allow for searches inside of videos. If Google has text of video dialog then they can point us to a certain point in a video to answer questions.

Yougle for MCE

Well if your like me then you like to watch videos on YouTube and Google videos. It kills time and some of them are pretty damn funny. You can watch them with a little program called Yougle on your Windows Media Center. Now the software is still in beta but it works well. I had a few issues when I first installed it. It was giving me run time errors. But I restarted my computer and it is working fine now. Below are some screen shots of the interface.

I went to search and searched for my own video on YouTube.

My video was second on the list.

Then click on the video and start playing. There is a full screen option but since YouTube videos are low resolution going into full screen makes the video not look good.

Overall the program works well. It is still in beta but works great. I wish that the top rated and most watched were more accurate to YouTube. To get the most out of the program it is best to search.
