This isn’t a streamer, it’s the full version of XBMC. That means no transcoding, you get full hardware decoding of 720p/1080p content. I was planning on installing it on my AppleTV2 but I didn’t have time this weekend. If you want to try it out you need to jailbreak your device first. After that the install isn’t too difficult. It’s not completely finished yet but it’s in the Android Market for you to try out. You need at least Android 1.5 and XBMC 9.11. They have a screenshot gallery for you to check out. It looks really good especially since they say they aren’t finished yet.

It won’t work on the PS3 Slim or firmware 3.30 but if you have the older PS3 and firmware you can find the directions here. You will get a lot more media functions with XBMC installed than with the default PS3 media types.

There aren’t a lot of steps to accomplish this. The one worry that I have, that commenters pointed out too, is that each time a new version comes out you will have to go back through the steps. But it gives you a great way to play older games on your TV.

The same people that made the Boxee and Hulu integrator have released XBMC Integrator for Windows Media Center. It allows you to switch between XBMC and Windows Media Center with the Windows Media Center remote. You need to have XBMC already installed on your computer for it to work.

If you’re like me you still have a old Xbox laying around. I don’t use it but after reading over the Xbox to HTPC hacks at hackaday, I’m thinking I need to do something with it. While XBMC isn’t going to give you everything in a media center, it will give you a great look and the ability to stream SD content. HD audio and video isn’t possible for a number of reason on the xbox but the biggest reason is power of the unit. It’s still great for SD though. I have over 200 DVDs ripped to my Windows Home Server that the Xbox could take advantage of. Even if you don’t have a Xbox, you can find them cheap and load XBMC to have a cheap media center.

The XBMC team has released 9.11 Camelot. There is a huge list of new features, new skins and plug-ins. One of the new skins that works with 9.11 is Xperience which is in beta. There was also a new version of Transparency. They have been really busy at XBMC, especially since it was the holidays.

There are so many media center streamers on the market but what if you want more control of formats and look. You might need to get a full fledged computer for the job. Generally that can cost a lot more than an streamer but not with NVidia’s ION graphics and Intel Atom. Lifehacker has a great post about setting up a Nettop desktop as a full media center machine. The nice things about the Acer Aspire Revo is it’s only $199.99 and has HDMI that supports 1080p. At that price you are equal to a lot of the nicer streamers but you get the ability to customize it for your needs. The Lifehacker posts installed XMBC and they walk you through everything to get that accomplished.

I hadn’t really looked at the ION based desktops before. I wish I would have. Their low price, HDMI out and silent operation make them great for HTPC setups.

The XBMC project has been ported over to Intel Macs. If you haven’t been running XBMC on your original Xbox you should. XBMC makes that old Xbox useful again by turning it into a media center. You might be wondering what XBMC would bring to Macs since there is already Front Row. Well XBMC can play almost any file type created. It is also customizable and new features are added all the time. You can also output HD to your TV through a Mac. With the original XBMC project the xbox can only do SD resolution. Right now from playing around it isn’t completely stable. But it’s a good first start.

I haven’t used XBMC but the people that have seem to really like it. Well with this iPhone app you can control your XBMC. The features for the program are listed below.
