Walmart Buys Vudu

Walmart has bought Vudu. First off this is huge for Vudu. I have questioned some of their new releases in the past like the very expensive XL2 and high priced boxes. They were also going to have a very hard time competing with the big dogs for good deals. They cashed out with Walmart.

Walmart has had trouble with digital media in the past and I don’t think buying Vudu will help them. I hope for all the people that currently use Vudu that Walmart will continue to support the product. Who knows maybe Walmart will surprise me and the cheaper Vudu boxes will be a must have device.

Roku Expects 100 Channels by Years End

According to Bloomberg, Roku expects to have 100 channels in the roku store by the end of the year. That makes that little $100 box that much more valuable. While I don’t use my Roku boxes as much as I used to, because of my blu-ray player, adding that many more channels will surely add something I want to watch. Let’s hope they are negotiating with some big partners.

Moxi Lowers Prices and Releases 3 Tuner DVR

Moxi lowered prices of their two-tuner HD DVRs to $499 down from $799. They also released multi-room bundles for two room and three room setups. The two room with a three-tuner HD DVR is $799 and comes with one Moxi Mate. The three room setup with a three-tuner HD DVR is $999 with two Moxi Mates. It’s nice to see the price drops but what most people have been complaining about still isn’t fixed and that’s the interface. I hope the price drops are just the first part of their overhaul.

Video: Verismo PoD Set Top Box

The Verismo PoD is an Internet TV Set Top Box. The nice thing is it’s only $99. The bad thing is who really needs another set top box. It pulls data from across the web and can even play DRM videos. It is small and has just the basics. You can add usb drive for storage, which is needed for BitTorrent. Check out the video below for more info.

Setting Up My Roku Netflix Box

My Roku Netflix box finally showed up. We are setting it up right now. I was going to do the live thing again but there are already tons of pictures and videos out. I will post my thoughts on the little device and get some thoughts from some other non-techie members in the family. So far it is a breeze to setup and starts shows almost instantly.

Vudu WiFi Adapter

Vudu has released a Wifi adapter for the Vudu set top box. The little device costs $80. It will be a nice feature that many homes could benefit from but the price on top of the $300 Vudu box is way to high. I would recommend the Roku Netflix box for $100.

Roku’s Netflix set top box has been the talk on the internet for the past few days. The more I read the better buy I think this is. Engadget got one and has a nice little review up. The best part of their review is the things you might not have heard.

Stuff we hadn’t yet heard about the Netflix Player

* Netflix dispatched a team of a couple dozen engineers to Roku to build the Netflix Player. Netflix didn’t want to be the only hardware partner (which we already know), but clearly wanted to make sure whomever released the first box really nailed it.
* Netflix (and Roku) understand that the device’s value doesn’t just end with playing back Netflix content, and anticipate the box having content coming in from other providers as partnerships get hammered out.
* The box only outputs at 480i (over composite and S-Video) and 480p (over component and HDMI), although Roku will enable HD content (and menus) as soon as Netflix gives the thumbs-up. From the sound of things, it seems like they want to do this sooner than later, which we clearly hope they will.

If you read that last part it sounds like we might see HD streaming from Netflix. If that happens I’m sure sales of this set top will skyrocket. Even without HD, the $100 price is perfect. And I agree with Engadget that it would be a nice gift for the parents.

The Neuros OSD is a versatile box that can act as a Digital Video Recorder capable of recording from virtually any source (cable or satellite TV, DVD, DVR/TiVoTM, VCR, game console, camcorder, etc), as well as stream and share video, music and photos between various devices including home entertainment centers, PCs and portables such as laptops, iPods, smartphones, and the PSP.
