What is does support:
Specifications

    * Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Extensible Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML): HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.0/1.1
* JavaScript 1.7, based on ECMA-262, revision 3: ECMA-262
* Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX)
* Cascading Style Sheets (CSS): CSS Level 1, CSS Level 2 and parts of CSS Level 3
* Document Object Model (DOM): DOM Level 1, DOM Level 2 and parts of DOM Level 3
* Extensible Markup Language (XML): XML 1.0, Namespaces in XML, Associating Style Sheets with XML
* Documents 1.0, Fragment Identifier for XML
* XSL Transformations (XSLT): XSLT 1.0
* XML Path Language (XPath): XPath 1.0
* Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG): Subset of SVG 1.1

The part I’m excited about is AJAX support. If you got a N800 I would suggest trying out the beta, it’s only going to get better with time.

The software update has Skype, Flash 9, and supports up to 16GB of memory. I haven’t updated mine yet but will as soon as I get home. Below is the list of updates from Nokia’s website.

http://www.nokia.com/A4305010

What’s new

OS 2007 edition v. 4.2007.26-8 includes:

Skype client support

After downloading the new software for the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet and installing Skype, users are ready to make free Internet Calls to other Skype users and low cost calls to landline or mobile phone wherever there is a wireless connection. From coffee shops to offices, to hotels or even on the beach, users will now be able to make Skype calls anywhere they can find a wi-fi hotspot. The Skype user experience familiar from desktop includes also chat, presence, contact details and account management features. The feature upgrade includes easy and quick installer for Skype client.

Adobe® Flash® 9 browser plug-in

Adobe® Flash® 9 browser plug-in has been one of the most wanted features requested by the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet users. The upgrade to Adobe® Flash® 9 browser plug-in opens the door to many rich media websites and considerably improves web usability. It also improves substantially the media performance when using video streaming services.

Up to 8 GB memory card support

More music and more videos imply more memory resources. Memory card support has increased from 2 GB to up to 8 GB, covering most part of the range of memory cards available in the market nowadays.

With two memory card slots the devices memory capability is extendable up to 16 GB. Over 2 GB SD memory cards must be SDHC compatible.

Other Improvements

A lot of work has been done into increasing the battery life of the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. Most of the improvements have been done around the wireless connection, resulting in remarkably longer online usages.

The new Internet Tablet OS brings some improvements at an application level as well. The most visible change is clarification of Now Playing and Library modes for Media Player. The contents of the cards are also scanned faster than before.

Touch screen sensitiveness has been improved through software enhancements. Now the screen areas with most intensive use register events more efficiently.

Nokia Internet Call Invitation (BETA) application

Nokia Internet Call Invitation (BETA) trial period has ended. The invitation mechanism has been removed and service will not be accessible after 31.8.2007.

New pre-installed content

    * Tableteer info applet
* Updated Internet radio channels
* Real Rhapsody player easy installer (available for US. residents only)
* Piquant new web sites

There is posts spreading around the Internet that the Nokia N800 has a FM chip in it to play radio stations. I tested it out today and it does work and it is really easy to do. The software isn’t perfect but it works. I’m expecting to see a better developed application since people know about it now. Below are the steps to get the radio enabled.

Do all the steps below on the N800.

1. The first thing you need is the radio application. You can get the app from this link: here.
Open the file in application manager and follow the on screen menus. Basically just click OK and Install.

2. Next you need to get xterm. If you already xTerm on your N800 then skip this step. You can download xterm here. Again follow the on screen boxes.

3. Once both applications are installed you need to go to xTerm. You can get there by going to your application list, extras, then to X terminal. Once X terminal opens just type in “fmradio” without the quotes. It will launch FM radio.

4. Plug in your headphones and enjoy. The headphones are used as the antenna. Quality is good.

Extra: You can add FM radio to the N800 homepage. While you are on the homepage click “home” at the top. Then click on “select applets…” You will see FM radio, click the check box and click OK.

Below is a video of the N800 radio application. I didn’t make it.

Note: make sure you understand what you are doing. This isn’t a Nokia app and could cause problems.

We finally got our Nokia N800. We ordered two of them here at work. I have been playing around with it this evening. I’m not going to post a bunch of pictures of it because there are pictures all over the place online. So far I am really happy with it. There are a few things that bother me about it but I’m sure it’s because I haven’t got into all the customizing of the settings. I did want to tell everyone that Gizmo has an installer for the N800 on their website. So if your a Gizmo user then you won’t have to setup the nokia as a jabber client. Now I keep hearing that skype is supposed to be compatible but there is no installer yet. Hey skype, post a beta for the N800 because I would love to try it out with the video. Right now there is no way to video conference with a built in client. You have to use the Nokia conference program to use video. Not a great solution. I found it to be rather annoying. My thinking is that Skype wasn’t ready but Nokia wanted to release the N800. The Nokia does come loaded with Google search, maps, mail, talk, and news. It was a good idea including Google products. The wifi has great range. I can pick up more wireless signals then my MacBook Pro. RSS reader is a nice touch. You can also store different RSS’s into folders. Web browsing is fast for text but with picture heavy websites it is slower than my Windows Mobile phone. Still plenty of power for web surfing. Like I said I’m happy with the N800. Since I work in a business environment I am working on getting exchange email on it, along with outlook contacts. I’ll give a more detailed update once I use it for a little while. The above list are just some of my first thoughts.
