Blockbuster is bringing it’s On Demand service to the living room. That shouldn’t be a surprise since the company has nothing going for it right now. I’m not sure there is a Blockbuster left in my area. Netflix wiped them out with DVD rentals and proactively went to DVD streaming which sealed the deal for Blockbusters death. Blockbusters last year launched On Demand which has a decent lineup of content and their software is getting better from what I hear to try and compete. They are partnering with Samsung to bring On Demand to HDTVs, Blu-ray players and home theater setups. This is a similar scenario to what Netfix started many years ago. While I use Netflix and have 2 Roku players I think this is a good thing. Competition will make both companies better and might prevent Netflix from doing a tiered pricing for streaming or drop the surcharge for Blu-rays. Anyone use Blockbuster On Demand? What do you think of the service?

I get asked all the time if I have a Blu-Ray player. I guess with how much technology I have around it seems natural that I would have the latest Blu-Ray player on the market. But I don’t and my 5 reasons why are below.

1. Blu-Ray players are still too expensive for me. $200 for a player. And the $200 players aren’t the type I would want to buy. I would rather go for a network connected one that I can stream Netflix. That would cost me even more.

2. Blu-Ray movies cost a lot more. They are trying to replace DVD with a more expensive option Blu-Ray. So why not charge 3x as much. It’s HD after all. It would have to be the worlds best movie for me to spend $35 on a movie. And I don’t know any movie made so far that I would pay that much for.

3. Netflix now charges more for Blu-Ray. It’s only $3 a month but I would still need that $200+ player from reason 1.

4. There are lots of ways to get HD content including movies. If there is really a movie that I want to watch in HD I just rent it. $3.99 for the HD rentals, new releases are $4.99 through DirecTV. I can rent a lot of movies at $4.99 before I get close to the start up cost of going to Blu-Ray.

5. Physical media is out. I don’t want to invest in a player that spins discs anymore. The only spinning disc I want is for a hard drive and I hope in the next few years that is out.

I say this but if I could get a Blu-Ray player for $100 to $150 I might consider it. Also I have an upconvert DVD player right now but if something happens to it I will look at replacing it with Blu-Ray. I still wouldn’t purchase the movies, I would go with Netflix. Anyone else holding off? What are your reasons?

While the box isn’t here yet they do have dreams of getting their rental service to set-top-boxes, xbox 360s, and PS3s.

Our goals in online video over the coming years are three-fold: one, to expand the content we offer online; two, to make it inexpensive and easy for consumers to view that content on the television; and three, to understand what the financial model for the hybrid service will be in the long-term.

Being a Netflix customer I would like more digital ways to get my rentals. Right now the only thing they offer is Windows download. What about a Mac version? What about a Windows Media Center plugin? There is more information over at Last 100

You purchase the box which they say will be under $500, hook it up to your TV, then browse the movies you want to watch. You can either rent the movie at 99 cents to $3.99 or purchase the movie. I think this is a really cool idea but the initial purchase price better be no where close to $500. For something like this you would need to rent movies cheaper than NetFlix or give rewards for multiple rentals. It will be interesting later this summer when it’s suppose to be released.
