Elgato released the EyeTV HD for cable and satellite HD content. It takes the component output on your set top box and feeds it into your computer, allowing you to record in HD with the EyeTV software. The EyeTV software is pretty slick along with the iPhone app that will allow you to stream to your phone. The EyeTV HD has a IR blaster so it can change the channels on the set top box. I wish that it would have had ethernet support. I don’t really want to buy another set top box for my computer when most likely one of my boxes wouldn’t be in use if I’m on my iMac. It’s still nice to see Elgato providing solutions for Mac DVRs. More info at Elgato.

I have continued to work with people on getting Time Machine setup and working with your Windows Home Server. I’m calling these new directions version 3 and it’s easier than the last steps that required an applescript. The reason why the applescript wasn’t working in version 2 is that some people had a Windows partition on their Macs, including myself on my new iMac. Instead of fixing the applescript to check for multiple partitions it is easier to just use Disk Utility. Below are the new directions. I have had multiple people confirm that they are working. For informational purpose you can find Version 1 and Version 2 of my directions. Version 2 has some good comments if you have trouble.

You still need have iTimeMachine enabled.

1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.

2. Select the Macintosh HD, then go to “File” -> “New” -> “Blank Disk Image”.

3. A box will come up with a lot of different options. The save as name is important as Time Machine will use that name to see if it’s correct. The save as name should be machinename_macaddress. For example mine is jeremy-iMac_0a0a0a0a0a0a. I’m not giving my MAC address but that’s what the 0a stuff is. You can find the name by going to sharing in system preferences or types hostname -fs in the terminal. The MAC address is for the connection that will be used for Time Machine. My laptops are wireless, my desktop using ethernet.

4. Name = whatever you want. I called mine Time Machine.

5. Size = Over your total data amount. Right now I set mine at 400g. With Disk Utility you can resize this later if you fill the amount.

6. Partition = Single Partition – Apple Partition Map

7. Image Format = sparse bundle disk image

8. Now create the image. Default is to save to your desktop.

9. Transfer that disk image from your desktop to you time machine folder on the WHS.

10. Point time machine to your WHS folder and start the backup.

If you have questions please leave comments. As always I will try to respond as fast as I can. This is still not supported and I give no guarantee on the safety of your data or reliability of your backups. It works for me and I have been backing my Macs up to Windows Home Server for months.

Plex, Mac Media Center, has already taken advantage of Apple opening up the GPU Framework. Everyone was excited when Apple opened it up hoping it would speed up flash. It’s nice to see Plex working so quickly to provide the support first, at least the first that I know of. Using hardware acceleration will take the load off of the CPU and put it on the GPU for better results with HD content. You have to have at least the NVidia 9400M or better GPU and be running Snow Leopard. Plex is free so try it out.

While there are a few different programs in the post it’s not complicated. Plus you can get a lot of control for only the things you want.

Elgato has a new tuner on the market. The EyeTV Netstream DTT is a dual network tuner that works with Mac and Windows Media Center. The nice thing about a network tuner is they don’t have to be next to your computer. They can also stream to multiple computer in the house. This tuner isn’t available in the US since it uses DTT. The Elgato website has a list of countries that it works with. My guess is that since the pulled the HDHomeRun from their website is that there will be a U.S. version soon.

* Stream digital TV (DVB-T/Freeview) to the computers on your home network
* Enjoy pristine digital quality television including HDTV where broadcast via DVB-T
* Compatible with Mac and PC; both can use EyeTV Netstream DTT at the same time
* Watch TV wirelessly on a portable computer if you have a Wi-Fi network
* As a network device, it does not have to be installed near your computers

The file format doesn’t matter as it will convert it live for you to stream. It reminds me a lot of Orb but more simplistic. If you just want to stream videos the Air Video app sounds like a great program. There is a free version that has some limitations or you can buy the Pro app for $2.99.

Google has released a new version of Chrome for Mac. The best part about this release is the extension support. Windows users have had the ability to add all sorts of cool and useful extension for awhile. I have been wanting the toolbar to come to Chrome but with extensions it really isn’t necessary. The other great feature added to this version is bookmark syncing. If you are using multiple computers this is a great feature. More at Google Mac Blog.
