Press Release:

MP3tunes and Roku Partner To Bring Personal iTunes Music Collection To TVs
An Industry First: No PC or home server required to play iTunes music libraries on Home Entertainment Systems
San Diego, CA – For the first time, music lovers can play their personal iTunes music collection on their TV without a home server. Roku, the market leader in streaming entertainment devices has added expanded support for personal music collections with the addition of MP3tunes. Available now on all Roku players, the MP3tunes channel connects securely to a customer’s personal music stored online in their MP3tunes Locker. After a few simple steps to connect and sync music to a web-based locker, any Roku becomes a rich music player.
“Now customers can get their music library to their TV without the complexity or cost of a home server,” said Michael Robertson, CEO of MP3tunes. “For less than $100, iTunes users or any music enthusiast can turn a TV into a home stereo and take advantage of the best speakers in their house.”
Roku customers can find the free MP3tunes channel in the Roku channel store. By adding this channel to their Roku, customers can access their song libraries and playlists which have historically been available only on their PC in iTunes or portable players which they sync. The MP3tunes channel defaults to a one-click shuffle mode, which immediately plays a random mix of music along with a visual display of accompanying cover art. Customers may choose to browse their music and select artists, albums or playlists to hear.
All Roku customers receive 10GB of free storage space for their music which, on average, will store music libraries up to 2,500 songs. Additional storage for larger music collections is available with MP3tunes premium locker accounts up to 200GBs. For a limited time, customers may also buy a Roku player with a $20 discount and get a free MP3tunes Premium Locker. See www.mp3tunes.com/rokubundle for more information.
“Roku customers are increasingly taking advantage of streaming music services, and now with MP3tunes we are giving them access to their full iTunes music library right on the TV,” said Jim Funk, vice president of business development for Roku, Inc. “In addition to being a terrific video player with support for Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, and a whole host of other great sports and entertainment content, the Roku player is also a gateway to rich audio entertainment thanks to MP3tunes.”
By choosing Roku as its first launch partner in the home entertainment category, MP3tunes joins major streaming services like Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX), Amazon Video On Demand (Nasdaq: AMZN), MLB.TV, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship®. The Roku digital video player joins a growing family of devices that play music from a secure MP3tunes locker including Apple iPhone, iTouch, Google Android and Logitech radios. MP3tunes’ unique open music API (www.mp3tunes.com/api) allows any net aware device for car, home, mobile to play a personal music collection.
A video tour of the service can be viewed at: http://www.youtube.com/user/mp3tunes#p/u/6/ctn4Dx0IGPE

Syncing iTunes music with your Android phone is actually very simple. All you need is DoubleTwist, which is a media manager application that allows you to sync iTunes content with it. Since you can’t directly connect you Android phone to iTunes you have to go with the middleman software to accomplish it. DoubleTwist does offer some really nice features that makes it worth the effort of installing. DoubleTwist allows you to browse the Android Market through the software. It presents you with the barcode for easy installing. It also allows you to drag and drop videos onto your Android phone. The video will automatically be converted to work with your phone. And of course you can sync music by syncing your iTunes playlists. DoubleTwist works with Mac/Windows and is free.

The video below is just a quick overview of mounting and syncing music.

The New York Times is reporting that Apple has acquired music streaming service Lala. I’m hoping this is good news and that Apple will launch a streaming music service. The bad in the short term is that Apple will probably shut down Lala in order to make the switch to whatever they have planned. Other companies like Google do the same thing with their new acquired companies. I have been wanting Apple to do a subscription based service for awhile. With all the DRM in these digital files I don’t want to own them. As past will show those files could become extinct. A monthly fee for as much as I could use would be the best option.

 1. Download HamachiX, and have your friend do the same.
2. Run HamachiX and let it do all the fun things it needs to do. Then click the Plus button and make up a network name and password. Optionally open the Preferences and set a nickname for simplicity’s sake.
3. Choose Create Network [and have your friend launch HamachiX and choose Join Network].
4. Give HamachiX a minute, and hit Refresh until you see your friend is connected.
5. Open iTunes and set up Home Sharing with the same account on both machines. If you had previously set up Home Sharing, click Advanced » Turn Off Home Sharing, then turn it back on to switch usernames.

I wouldn’t do this with a friend unless you live in some other country than the US. The HamachiX program hasn’t been updated since 2006 so this might not be the best solution but it is a solution. The comments have a few other suggestions that you might want to try if your looking for this type of feature.

Gizmodo has a great how-to on ripping your CDs to digital. People don’t put much thought into ripping your CDs, it’s pretty easy, but you probably should. Once the file is ripped off the CD you probably won’t touch the CD again. You need to make sure the first rip is the best quality it can be. From there you can convert into lower quality if you need a more compatible format like MP3. The recommendation is to ditch iTunes and Windows Media Player to do the ripping and move over to something that offers more options and better quality. While I have imported 200 plus CDs and probably won’t do it again, the article is a must read if your thinking about ripping.

With the new iTunes Home Sharing it makes perfect sense to install iTunes 9 on your Windows Home Server. You can manage one copy of your tunes on the server and stream them to all the computers in your house. The problem is the install doesn’t work. CrunchGear has a how-to on getting the install to work. It’s a 7 step process but it isn’t difficult. The directions are clear and include pictures so don’t be discouraged. iPod syncing doesn’t work with the install. Also there is an error message that pops up when the Windows Home Server starts up but it doesn’t effect Home Sharing. Hopefully this will be fixed in the next update to iTunes.
