With all the news about the iPad people forget that there are some other very interesting tablets coming out. The HP Slate is one device that will make you take a closer look. With two cameras, front and back, and the full computing experience it will fit the needs of a lot of people. The one thing that concerns me is the 5 hours of battery life. Just like a laptop you will eventually have to find a plug for a day of computing. HP has some more detail about it on their site and I embedded a video below. The video shows off Skype which is probably a jab at the iPad since it doesn’t have a camera.

HP released a free plug-in called mediasmart expander for TiVo. This is very cool since you can use the Windows Home Server as storage of your TiVo recordings.

— transfer shows from TiVo to a HP MediaSmart Server and back to TiVo

— view TiVo recordings stored on a HP MediaSmart Server

— watch TiVo recordings that are stored on the HP MediaSmart Server on any PC in the home using Windows Media Player

I wish DirecTV would release something like this. But I guess HP made the software and not TiVo which says a lot of HP.

Press Release below:
PALO ALTO, Calif., March 10, 2010 – HP today made available HP MediaSmart Expander for TiVo®, a new software application that lets TiVo DVR(1) owners manage video content from an HP MediaSmart Server.(2)

With a high-definition (HD) DVR from TiVo, consumers can record and pause live TV, and access the world’s largest on-demand video store to watch hit movies, TV shows, music videos and cool web videos.

With the new software application, which is offered at no charge to MediaSmart server owners, TiVo customers can:

— transfer shows from TiVo to a HP MediaSmart Server and back to TiVo

— view TiVo recordings stored on a HP MediaSmart Server

— watch TiVo recordings that are stored on the HP MediaSmart Server on any PC in the home using Windows Media Player

Based on the Microsoft Windows® Home Server platform, the HP MediaSmart Server is a central repository for automatically backing up and accessing digital music, videos, photos and documents from multiple computers on a home network.(3)

The HP MediaSmart Server automatically organizes files across all Windows and Mac computers, streams media across a home network and the Internet,(4) and publishes photos to popular social networking and photo sharing sites.

“The HP MediaSmart Server is the ideal companion to TiVo. With the HP MediaSmart Expander for TiVo, consumers don’t have to worry about running out of high-definition storage space since they can save their movies and shows on the HP MediaSmart Server and watch them on any computer in the home,” said Jason Zajac, vice president of Attach, HP Personal Systems Group. “Plus, consumers will benefit from all of the additional features the HP MediaSmart Server provides, such as backing up all Windows and Mac computers.”

Pricing and availability

The free HP MediaSmart Expander for TiVo application can be accessed through the Windows Home Server Console of the HP MediaSmart Server EX90/EX495 and HP Data Vault.

(1) Requires TiVo DVR Series II, Series III, TiVo Premier and TiVo desktop software.

(2) Compatible with HP MediaSmart Servers EX490/EX495. HP MediaSmart Server, PCs and TiVo DVR must be on the same network.

HP is making the 3.0 software available for EX480/475/485 and 487 owners. The upgrade isn’t free but $25 isn’t bad for all the new features. You also need at least 1GB of memory for some features to work. Now you don’t have to be behind the EX49x owners. This is a good move by HP and will make a lot of early adopters happy.

The 3.0 software update DVD will be available to order beginning later this week, with shipments beginning next week. These optional updates are available to purchase for owners of our EX470/475/485/487 products who want to upgrade their servers to the latest 3.0 software that is shipping on the EX490/495 products.

Please note the previously communicated information related to these updates:

1) The cost of the upgrade DVD has been finalized and will be US$25 or €25.

2) These upgrades will be available as a server recovery solution. HP recommends that you back up all server files prior to installing the upgrade.

3) This upgrade is not recommended for EX470/475 owners who have not already upgraded their Server DRAM to 1GB as certain features will not function.

To order the upgrade DVD, visit www.hp.com and enter your product model number in the “Support and Drivers” section. Then follow the path for your MediaSmart Server model number to order the upgrades.

We thank everyone for their continued support of the MediaSmart Server family of products.

The HP touch wall isn’t something that you will see in your house anytime soon but it’s still really cool to see. It’s like a giant touchsmart computer. The WSJ had the chance to see it in action. While this screen is call the “wall of touch” you don’t have to touch it for it to work. They are testing touchless technology to control the screen. It uses cameras and magnets to trigger touch before the touch. I would have a hard time not touching the screen. I still need the feel of touch. Maybe they will come out with gloves that make my fingers feel like they touched a screen I’m not suposed to touch. Still very cool.

HP is dropping the media center lineup. I think this is a bad move on their part. They are developing their own MediaSmart line that functions like Windows Media Center. My guess is that Microsoft was taking too long to really market Windows Media Center. Unlike some of Microsoft’s other hardware and software, Media Center has never really had the attention it deserves. Most people don’t even realize what Media Center is and what it can do. But what amazes me is HP is developing hardware for Windows Home Server. Home Server can be used to store the files from Media Center in one central location. I think by keeping Windows Media Center machines they could have added value to the other hardware they manufacture. And now with AppleTV out, people that were never aware before are aware of the possibilities of computers in the living room. Lets hope that MediaSmart works well with Media Center.

I do have to give credit to HP for embracing media center as they did. Without HP I’m sure Windows Media Center wouldn’t have done nothing and been swept under the rugs.

Consumer reports has a first look at the HP Touch Smart Desktop. I’m really impressed with the review. More and more families are getting multiple computers in the house. I think this computer would be perfect for a kitchen area computer. It features TV tuners, HDMI, and FM tuner. It is a 19″ touch screen that has an interface like Media Center. The reason why I say it would be perfect for the kitchen is this from the article: “There’s easy access to a calendar, local weather, and your photo albums. A family message center uses electronic “sticky notes” on which you can write, draw, or record.” Plus lots of families spend plenty of time in the kitchen. This computer could help organize your life instead of putting notes on the refrigerator. Check out the link above for more info and their thoughts. The link below is the HP page. HP if your listening I would love to test one of these out. I think you have a really nice product here.
