It takes the component output on your set top box and feeds it into your computer, allowing you to record in HD with the EyeTV software. The EyeTV software is pretty slick along with the iPhone app that will allow you to stream to your phone. The EyeTV HD has a IR blaster so it can change the channels on the set top box. I wish that it would have had ethernet support. I don’t really want to buy another set top box for my computer when most likely one of my boxes wouldn’t be in use if I’m on my iMac. It’s still nice to see Elgato providing solutions for Mac DVRs. More info at Elgato.

The EyeTV Netstream DTT is a dual network tuner that works with Mac and Windows Media Center. The nice thing about a network tuner is they don’t have to be next to your computer. They can also stream to multiple computer in the house. This tuner isn’t available in the US since it uses DTT. The Elgato website has a list of countries that it works with. My guess is that since the pulled the HDHomeRun from their website is that there will be a U.S. version soon.

* Stream digital TV (DVB-T/Freeview) to the computers on your home network
* Enjoy pristine digital quality television including HDTV where broadcast via DVB-T
* Compatible with Mac and PC; both can use EyeTV Netstream DTT at the same time
* Watch TV wirelessly on a portable computer if you have a Wi-Fi network
* As a network device, it does not have to be installed near your computers

EyeTV launched Live TV streaming to the iPhone over 3g. It’s a web app that you pull up in the Safari browser. By going to live3g.eyetv.com you are prompted to logon. You can watch your recordings along with live Tv.

It’s not full featured like the iPhone App, which costs $4.99, but it might save you from missing your favorite show if you can’t find wifi. The Elgato website has more info along with a nice comparison chart for the paid iPhone app vs. the web app.

Elgato has released a placeshifting app for the iPhone. The app is $5 and allows you to watch, record, and enjoy live and recorded TV on your iPhone or iPod touch. I always like the eyeTV software because of its OS X look and feel. I haven’t really used it much since early version 3 release. There are plug-ins to integrate into front row and if you get a good remote you can control boxee, front row and eyetv to make for a really nice experience. Elgato has updated it’s eyeTV software to be compatible with Leopard. This was quick on elgato’s part and is appreciated by it’s users. There are a few new features below.

Leopard features galore. Spaces support (so that TV shows can follow you, whichever Space you swap to), QuickLook for your recordings, and the ability to browse the EyeTV Archive folder bundle with CoverFlow. Perhaps the crowning feature, however, is the integration of iChat Theater playback for your video files, along with playback controls and the ability to add your own commentary over the playback. Become your own broadcast hub!

Slingbox might be in a little trouble with all these new services coming out. First Microsoft bought webguide and made it free. It turns your Media Center into a slingbox -like box. Now Elgato has eyeTV 2.5 that offers wifi streaming of videos. This is meant to only stream around your house using the Mac of your choice as the server. But you can port forward on your router and use many services on the web that will allow you to access those streaming files anywhere. While the new feature doesn’t compare to the total package of a slingbox and it doesn’t come close to webguide for windows media center, it is a great addition to an already great piece of software. I look to see elgato continuing to provide more features to compliment the Apple lineup of products, ipod, iphone, appleTV. Now this is a nice device to have. The HDHomeRun has two built-in tuners so you can watch a station while you record another one. It works over the network so you don’t need cable by your computer. And now the HDHomeRun works with Elgato’s EyeTV software. If your a mac user what more would you want. It does cost $200 so it is a little pricey but if your serious about having a Mac media center then this little device will take it up a notch.

I don’t know how I missed this with the new version of eyeTV. The new eyeTV 2.4 software has support of set-top boxes. This is good news as more and more people switch to HD programming that require such boxes to receive the signals. It is only supported in the US. If anyone has tried it out I would love to know how it works.

This site has a nice review of the Elgato EyeTV Hybrid. I bought the EyeTV 250 and I’m now wishing I would have went with something more portable for my MacBook Pro. The review has some nice screenshots with some great detail of setup. Here is another review by TUAW here.
