If you have a lot of Blu-Ray discs than the 100 disc changer from S1Digital might be for you. It works with Windows Media Center and Windows Home Server. It can even rip your Blu-Ray discs for you. The cool thing is it does one after another until it’s finished with them all. That would be a huge time saver. Something like this isn’t cheap, at $1500. If you have a lot of other S1Digital gear than that might not seem like a lot.

Press release below:

S1DIGITAL INTRODUCES FIRST BLU-RAY DISC CHANGER FULLY INTEGRATED WITH MEDIA CENTER

S1Digital continues to grow its digital entertainment ecosystem with the introduction of a Blu-ray Disc Changer.

Rochelle Park, NJ – February 3, 2010 – S1Digital, the leader in digital entertainment solutions, today announced the launch of the S1Digital Blu-ray Disc Changer. The changer can hold 100 discs and seamlessly integrates with any S1Digital Entertainment Server or Media Center.

When connected to an S1Digital Media Center or any third party Microsoft Windows 7 or Vista PC that includes media center, customers are able to load up to 100 Blu-ray and/or DVD movies into the S1Digital Bly-ray Disc Changer. Using the included playback software, each disc will be scanned and metadata and cover-art automatically downloaded to the server. Once catalogued, users can view more information about the movie, or watch the movie by selecting the appropriate cover-art, which is all available on the familiar and easy-to-use media center interface. The changer is simple to use and enables almost instant access to movies without having to physically find and load each movie. (This feature is coming soon).

“No other solution currently on the market integrates a Blu-ray changer with media center,” said Paul Heitlinger, President of S1Digital. “For customers that want instant and direct access to their movie discs, this is the only solution.”

When connected to an S1Digital Entertainment Server or any third party Windows Home Server, customers can automatically archive their Blu-ray, DVD and CD discs to the server*. With the included software, every movie and audio disc will automatically be stored on the hard drive, catalogued and metadata and cover-art will be downloaded. As each movie or album is stored, it is immediately available on the customer’s home network from any S1Digital Media Center (or other PCs and certain media streaming devices) for playback.

“A typical Blu-ray disc can take an hour or more to archive,” continues Paul Heitlinger. “With our solution, you simply load up the changer and hit go. You don’t have to load each disc one by one. The changer will automatically move from disc to disc so customers don’t have to worry about spending days manually storing movies and music.”

The S1Digital Blu-ray Disc Changer is currently shipping and available for an MSRP of $1499 from http://www.s1digital.com/S1Digital_Blu_ray_disc_changer_p/bdc.htm.

Dealer and reseller enquiries are welcome by contacting

For more information on S1Digital, visit http://www.s1digital.com/

* Non copy protected discs only

People have been backing up (ripping) DVDs and CDs for some time now on Mac. Blu-ray discs haven’t been as popular, mostly because there is no option for a Blu-ray drive when ordering a computer. If you bought either an internal or external blu-ray player you can use MakeMKV to backup those discs. The program is free right now because it’s in beta.

Reads DVD and Blu-ray discs
Reads Blu-ray discs protected with latest versions of AACS and BD+
Preserves all video and audio tracks, including HD audio
Preserves chapters information
Preserves all meta-information (track language, audio type)
Fast conversion – converts as fast as your drive can read data.
No additional software is required for conversion or decryption.
Available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux
Functionality to open DVD discs is free and will always stay free.
All features (including Blu-ray decryption and processing) are free during BETA.

The files are going to be big, around 40GB in size, and in MKV format. You can always fire up handbrake afterwards with the new 64-bit beta and convert the MKV into a AppleTV or iPhone friendly format.

I get asked all the time if I have a Blu-Ray player. I guess with how much technology I have around it seems natural that I would have the latest Blu-Ray player on the market. But I don’t and my 5 reasons why are below.

1. Blu-Ray players are still too expensive for me. $200 for a player. And the $200 players aren’t the type I would want to buy. I would rather go for a network connected one that I can stream Netflix. That would cost me even more.

2. Blu-Ray movies cost a lot more. They are trying to replace DVD with a more expensive option Blu-Ray. So why not charge 3x as much. It’s HD after all. It would have to be the worlds best movie for me to spend $35 on a movie. And I don’t know any movie made so far that I would pay that much for.

3. Netflix now charges more for Blu-Ray. It’s only $3 a month but I would still need that $200+ player from reason 1.

4. There are lots of ways to get HD content including movies. If there is really a movie that I want to watch in HD I just rent it. $3.99 for the HD rentals, new releases are $4.99 through DirecTV. I can rent a lot of movies at $4.99 before I get close to the start up cost of going to Blu-Ray.

5. Physical media is out. I don’t want to invest in a player that spins discs anymore. The only spinning disc I want is for a hard drive and I hope in the next few years that is out.

I say this but if I could get a Blu-Ray player for $100 to $150 I might consider it. Also I have an upconvert DVD player right now but if something happens to it I will look at replacing it with Blu-Ray. I still wouldn’t purchase the movies, I would go with Netflix. Anyone else holding off? What are your reasons?

I made my predictions about HD-DVD and I was wrong. I thought for sure with the cheaper prices and better features it would win. Now the high-end media centers are switching to Blu-ray. Niveus is now supporting Blu-ray and stopping production of HD-DVD media centers. You can read more about that here and here.

My suggestion if you already have a HD-DVD drive is not to sell it. You will take a huge loss it won’t be worth it. I would check out the sales on HD-DVD titles that most online stores are having. Buying up movies cheaper than you can even get the DVD version. Plus that HD-DVD drive is an up-convert for standard DVDs, so think of it as a really nice DVD player. I’m just glad I didn’t buy one like I wanted.

Note to Twentieth Century Fox: As you can see, BD+ didn’t offer you any advanced security, it just annoyed some of your customers with older players. So could you please cut this crap and start publishing your titles on HD DVD? There are thousands of people willing to give you money.

Trusted Reviews has a write up on the new Sony Vaio VGX-XL202 Media Center PC with Blu-ray Drive.

Sony always does good design work on their computers. This computer is no exception. It would look really good in your stereo cabinet. But it’s not just about looks, it has a ton of features packed into that small case. Read the review for their thoughts. My thoughts I would rather build my own because Sony equipment doesn’t come cheap. But Sony did include a nice looking remote with a great keyboard. You will see in the photos that Sony’s keyboard has a track pad built in. Why can’t Microsoft do that with their keyboard.
