XBMC for AppleTV2, iPad and iPhone

The XBMC team released a version for the AppleTV2, iPad and iPhone. This isn’t a streamer, it’s the full version of XBMC. That means no transcoding, you get full hardware decoding of 720p/1080p content. I was planning on installing it on my AppleTV2 but I didn’t have time this weekend. If you want to try it out you need to jailbreak your device first. After that the install isn’t too difficult. For detailed instruction for the AppleTV2 visit AppleTVHacks.net. The new AppleTV showed up a few days and I just had to break it out and start playing with it. I won’t bore you with unboxing photos because if you’re a Mac fan you have probably already looked at them. I’ll also keep this review a little shorter since there is already a ton of information out there. I wanted to go over what I liked and didn’t like in the first day of using the AppleTV.

Hardware:

New AppleTV Coming?

It is rumored that a new AppleTV is coming. The hardware will run a version of iPhone OS 4 and have the ability to dish out your content at 1080p. It will be like an iPhone without the screen. The best part is the $100 price tag. While this is all rumor it is right on what I would think the next AppleTV would be. The app store is huge and partly the reason behind the iPhones success. Bringing all those apps along with new and creative apps will make the AppleTV a very hot item. If Nintendo didn’t like Apple cutting into their DS sales with the iPod Touch, they really aren’t going to like this new AppleTV cutting into Wii sales.

Again, this is all rumor right now but it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s not true.

Boxee Beta Now On AppleTV

There are now simple instructions on how to get Boxee Beta working with AppleTV. With the latest version of Beta being announced it was stated that it wouldn’t work with AppleTV, unless you had a lot of time on your hands to make it work. This is good news for everyone wanting more out of their AppleTV. I’m glad Boxee was so quick to get it back up and running.

Backup Blu-ray Discs on Mac

People have been backing up (ripping) DVDs and CDs for some time now on Mac. Blu-ray discs haven’t been as popular, mostly because there is no option for a Blu-ray drive when ordering a computer. If you bought either an internal or external blu-ray player you can use MakeMKV to backup those discs. The program is free right now because it’s in beta.

Reads DVD and Blu-ray discs
Reads Blu-ray discs protected with latest versions of AACS and BD+
Preserves all video and audio tracks, including HD audio
Preserves chapters information
Preserves all meta-information (track language, audio type)
Fast conversion – converts as fast as your drive can read data.
No additional software is required for conversion or decryption.
Available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux
Functionality to open DVD discs is free and will always stay free.
All features (including Blu-ray decryption and processing) are free during BETA.

The files are going to be big, around 40GB in size, and in MKV format. You can always fire up handbrake afterwards with the new 64-bit beta and convert the MKV into a AppleTV or iPhone friendly format.

Get Boxee Beta on the AppleTV

There is already step-by-step instructions on getting the new Boxee Beta on the AppleTV. It’s not the easiest installation, like the old days, but if you like to tinker it shouldn’t take too long. Since I don’t have a AppleTV let me know how it goes.

Apple today released version 3.0 for AppleTV. It now has Genius Mixes, iTunes LP and radio stations. Not anything ground breaking for a 3.0 release. While it does a great job syncing with iTunes for the price it should be able to take more media formats. But you can install Boxee if you need more functionality.

AppleTV Receives a Price Cut to $229

Apple today dropped the price of the AppleTV 160GB version to $229. They also dropped the 40GB version all together. That’s good news for people in the market but it might also mean that something else is going to replace it. Sine it has been 3 years since the product launch I’m guessing that something new has to be in the works. Maybe a subscription service that so many people want.

Install XBMC on Your AppleTV

XBMC is a fast growing media center application. It is building a user base by playing almost any format and because it is being ported to different platforms. Over at the XBMC forums there are directions on installing XBMC on your AppleTV. AppleTV is nice for Apple content but if you want to make it the ultimate media center device then installing XBMC on it might be what you need. You will need to hack that AppleTV but the directions look fairly straightforward. I don’t have an AppleTV so fill me in on how it works in the comments.
