Apple to Remove MacDefender with Software Update

Apple will be fixing MacDefender Malware with a software update in the coming days. They also provided directions on removing MacDefender from your computer. I have included the removal steps below which is easy to remove. <More at MadeForMac>

iTunes Special Announcement Tomorrow

“Tomorrow is just another day. That you’ll never forget.” That’s what is posted on the front page of apple.com. To take over the front page of Apple it must be something big. There are a couple rumors that hold some ground about what is coming. The first is the Wall Street Journal is saying the Beatles will be coming to the iTunes store. The second is iTunes live streaming is coming.

Apple Updates and Releases New Products

Apple updated the iMac and Mac Pro today. They also released a new Magic Trackpad and battery charger. I called bluff when it was rumored by a few sites since right now is Apple’s back-to-school special. I was wrong. The iMac and Mac Pro got processor bumps. The iMac features the core i3, i5 or i7. You can get the new Mac Pro with 12 cores of computing power. My 8 core Mac Pro at work is awesome, I’m just wondering if I need 4 more cores.

The new Magic Trackpad is something I’m very interested in. I like my trackpad on my MacBook Pro so much that I bought the wacom bamboo tablet to use as a trackpad on the desktop. It worked and I was happy with it but it was still missing the fine control of the MBP trackpad. I’m looking forward to testing the Magic Trackpad out.

The battery charger was a surprise. But at $29 it’s not a bad price since it comes with 6 batteries that are supposed to last 10 years. Apple also says it has the lowest vampire loads of any competitors. Energy efficient is good.

Apple Fixes iPhone 4 Antenna With Free Bumper Case

Yesterday was the Apple press conference to address the world about the iPhone 4 antenna issues. They didn’t really apologize for the issue but rather provided some information about why it’s happening. Their fix is to give out free bumpers if you are having issues and issue a refund if you already bought one. Since they can’t provide enough bumper cases they will allow you to choose from some third party cases as well.

They really wanted to stress that the iPhone 4 isn’t the only phone that has these sorts of issues. They talked about other phones and how if you hold them a certain way they will drop in signal. Read the rest of this entry>

New AppleTV Coming?

It is rumored that a new AppleTV is coming. The hardware will run a version of iPhone OS 4 and have the ability to dish out your content at 1080p. It will be like an iPhone without the screen. The best part is the $100 price tag. While this is all rumor it is right on what I would think the next AppleTV would be. The app store is huge and partly the reason behind the iPhones success. Bringing all those apps along with new and creative apps will make the AppleTV a very hot item. If Nintendo didn’t like Apple cutting into their DS sales with the iPod Touch, they really aren’t going to like this new AppleTV cutting into Wii sales.

Again, this is all rumor right now but it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s not true.

Here’s another reason to jailbreak your iPad. The video below shows SNES emulator running on iPad. It uses a iPhone as the controller. It looks great and I love apps that use either a iPod Touch or iPhone as a controller. The best part is it’s free. You can find out more about the app here at the developers website.

Version 3: Use Time Machine with Windows Home Server

I have continued to work with people on getting Time Machine setup and working with your Windows Home Server. I’m calling these new directions version 3 and it’s easier than the last steps that required an applescript. The reason why the applescript wasn’t working in version 2 is that some people had a Windows partition on their Macs, including myself on my new iMac. Instead of fixing the applescript to check for multiple partitions it is easier to just use Disk Utility. Below are the new directions. I have had multiple people confirm that they are working. For informational purpose you can find Version 1 and Version 2 of my directions. Version 2 has some good comments if you have trouble.

You still need have iTimeMachine enabled.

UPDATE: iTimeMachine is no longer active. Use the following command in terminal to enable network disks. The following command does what iTimeMachine did.

defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.

2. Select the Macintosh HD, then go to “File” -> “New” -> “Blank Disk Image”.

3. A box will come up with a lot of different options. The save as name is important as Time Machine will use that name to see if it’s correct. The save as name should be machinename_macaddress. For example mine is jeremy-iMac_0a0a0a0a0a0a. I’m not giving my MAC address but that’s what the 0a stuff is. You can find the name by going to sharing in system preferences or types hostname -fs in the terminal. The MAC address is for the connection that will be used for Time Machine. My laptops are wireless, my desktop using ethernet. Important: You need to use the MAC address for the ethernet card. You can still use wireless after is it setup and running.

4. Name = whatever you want. I called mine Time Machine.

5. Size = Over your total data amount. Right now I set mine at 400g. With Disk Utility you can resize this later if you fill the amount.

6. Partition = Single Partition – Apple Partition Map

7. Image Format = sparse bundle disk image

8. Now create the image. Default is to save to your desktop.

9. Transfer that disk image from your desktop to you time machine folder on the WHS.

10. Point time machine to your WHS folder and start the backup.

If you have questions please leave comments. As always I will try to respond as fast as I can. This is still not supported and I give no guarantee on the safety of your data or reliability of your backups. It works for me and I have been backing my Macs up to Windows Home Server for months.

Looks like Apple is going to run a new commercial called “What is iPad?”. I don’t think they are having any trouble selling them. I know at the University I work at they are still ordering 100s at a time and Apple can’t keep us stocked. We still haven’t received a single 3G model. The new commercial is embedded below.

Weatherfront Adds the Forecast to Front Row

Weatherfront is a add-in for Apple’s Front Row that displays the forecast for your area. It’s early in development and doesn’t have any fancy maps but if you haven’t seen the outdoors in awhile you can at least see how nice it is out. It works with 10.5 and 10.6.

Dropbox Comes to the iPad

Dropbox has been updated for the iPad. It’s not just a scaled up version of the iPhone app. While the app does allow you to look at PDFs and word documents there is now a button to open with. You can open a document in Keynote, for example, right from Dropbox. That’s is an awesome feature. It’s available in the iTunes store now.
